Life Upon the Wicked Stage
Anyone who really knows me at all could tell you that I am a sucker for live theatre. Like a HUGE sucker. I listen to musical music pretty much anytime I'm alone in my car, I watch clips on my Instagram feed, I follow the lives of Broadway actors. My brother lives in NYC and I refuse to go and see him until Broadway opens back up after this whole COVID debacle. Like I said, I am a sucker for live theatre.
So this week, I've been thinking about the effect of live theatre and why I feel so much more connected to it than any other kind of media. Something about being there in person and listening to the words and music fill me will literally make me cry in just about any play, regardless of whether it is sad or not.
This last weekend I went and saw Cinderella being done by a local theatre in Orem and even though I didn't love the story line or the music, I still felt this unmistakable pull just simply from being there. Everything about it is fascinating to me: the acting, the singing, the costuming, the sets, everything! There is so much talent and work that goes into making live theatre work that I cannot even begin to fathom it and I've done it before!
I guess what I want to say is that there is something underrated about watching someone perform something live. You have a connection with the actors and musicians that is simply not captured through a screen. It is its own kind of magic. A magic that I hope can stick with me throughout the rest of my life.
So true! I think this is the same with a lot of different types of media. Digital replications simply cannot capture the beauty of a piece of art, or a play, or a symphony.
