The Story

This week I've watched a fair amount of television media and mostly I've been thinking about what makes me love some media more than others. I am not at all a picky media watcher. I can enjoy pretty much any kind of movie or TV series (I draw the line at documentaries, however). But in my vast experience of media-related immersion, I have realized that I simply love some shows more than others. And as I thought pondering on it, I have come to realize that one really big thing for me is the storyline and the way that it is portrayed.

I am as much of a sucker for a good Hallmark or Marvel movie as the next person, but when I am looking back on shows and movies that have really impacted me, those are not the movies that stand out to me. They don't really have a storyline. They are all just fluff and fighting. What stands out to me in my memory are the movies and shows that have a story to tell and everything revolves around telling that story.

I love Korean dramas and animes (much to the bewilderment of my parents and siblings) because everything revolves around telling the story. They are not vying for a season renewal, they're not trying to gain followers or whatever. They simply start out a story with the end in mind and every single scene, interaction, piece of dialogue, etc... is written and portrayed with that end in mind and everything is pushing the story toward that planned end. It makes for some pretty magical media in my opinion.

  1. Yes, wow! Love how you put that "fluff and fighting." The last marvel movie I watched had a 30 minute battle scene and I put it on double speed because it was seriously that boring. I love movies/shows that tell awesome stories. A few of my favorites are Avatar/Legend of Kora, Wonder, Little Women, and Saving Mr. Banks.
