A Weekend of Cobra Kai
For several weeks, my roommate has been trying to get me to watch the TV show Cobra Kai on Netflix. As a person who has never actually seen the infamous Karate Kid, the idea of watching a television series that merely exists to be its sequel was not appealing. However, with the prospect of many unfilled hours over Labor Day weekend, I finally relented and we binge-watched both seasons in just two days.
Although there were intermittent moments of confusion about the frequent Karate Kid flashbacks, right from the beginning I was actually pretty hooked, even without ever having seen the Karate Kid. By the end of the show, though, I was completely suckered. I even shed a few tears in the last episode and am very impatiently waiting for the third season to come out next year.
Now it's not completely unheard of for me to completely binge watch an entire television show in a few days (or even one sitting), but something about this show really touched me. I loved watching all of the character growth that happened during the show by learning to put aside toxic habits they were taught in childhood.
Overall, however, the show really just taught me to remember that every person has both good and bad in them. None of the characters in the show are wholly good or wholly bad. They all make good and bad decisions and the consequences of those actions affect the people around them in both positive and negative ways. But you have to love them all the same. I loved the reminder that it is possible to love anyone when you try to understand where they are coming from and the reasons why they do what they do. It's something I want to remember and implement better in my life from now on.
It really is a great show! I liked what you had to say about the character development. Thanks for your thoughts!
